almost hidden in shadows—

black robes, white faces.

A temple garden—

green blades pulled up from the sand

wither in small heaps.

The ceremony finished

the place is silent except

for a boy sweeping.

The open window

lets in a smell of wet leaves.

How soft the damp air.

Bamboo and maple

twigs bend down at our windows.

The weight of thin rain.

Clouds on Daimonji—

in quiet contemplation

watching them drift in.

Weighted down with rain

even tips of cedar twigs

lean toward the earth.
